People have been coming to America in droves since the American revolution. In 1776, Thomas Jefferson penned the Declaration of Independence. That document stated that Americans wanted to be free from the tyranny of England. So, people from all countries flocked to America for a better life. One that they could forge with their own hands. One, that if they dreamed big enough and worked hard enough, they could realize their dreams and accomplishments. Most of us have our ancestors to thank for us being born here. It wasn’t until 1931, that the term American Dream was first penned by historian James Truslow Adams. In his best-selling book, Epic of America, published in 1931, Adams described it as, “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.”
For most of us, the American Dream, is building a life for our family and ourselves, through diligence, persistence, and hard work. We strive for a better life for our children and their children. That has always been the promise of America. That, is what drives us each day to fulfill our dreams.
Over the years, Adams’ definition has changed to mean different things to different generations of Americans. However, the belief that the American Dream is achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking, and hard work still exists today. There are many examples of people, just like us, accomplishing their dreams.
